Lessons from Esther: The king’s permission

8 Write ye also for the Jews, as it liketh you, in the king's name, and seal it with the king's ring: for the writing which is written in the king's name, and sealed with the king's ring, may no man reverse. 9 Then were the king's scribes called at that time in the third month, that is, the month Sivan, on the three and twentieth day thereof; and it was written according to all that Mordecai commanded unto the Jews, and to the lieutenants, and the deputies and rulers of the provinces which are from India unto Ethiopia, an hundred twenty and seven provinces, unto every province according to the writing thereof, and unto every people after their language, and to the Jews according to their writing, and according to their language. 10 And he wrote in the king Ahasuerus' name, and sealed it with the king's ring, and sent letters by posts on horseback, and riders on mules, camels, and young dromedaries: 11 Wherein the king granted the Jews which were in every city to gather themselves together, and to stand for their life, to destroy, to slay, and to cause to perish, all the power of the people and province that would assault them, both little ones and women, and to take the spoil of them for a prey, 12 Upon one day in all the provinces of king Ahasuerus, namely, upon the thirteenth day of the twelfth month, which is the month Adar. 13 The copy of the writing for a commandment to be given in every province was published unto all people, and that the Jews should be ready against that day to avenge themselves on their enemies. Esther 8:8-13

The king has not finished his proposal. He now explains the rest of his plan. The first thing that needs to be done is to start the “writing campaign”. Letters need to be written and delivered to all 127 provinces.

This was not a job for Mordecai but the king’s scribes were called in to do the job. Remember there were no computers, iPads, word processors or even typewriters. Each word needed to be written by hand. Each letter was written separately, over and over the words were written in 127 letters. The letters were written in the various languages of the provinces, this was a very labor intensive project. Each letter was sealed by the king’s special seal; the letters could not be reversed. As always what the king said would stand.

When the writing was done, the letters were packed and sent by horse, mules, camels and even dromedaries. This was serious business the news had to get out and get out fast.

This letter was to counteract the letter sent by Haman. The letter sent by Haman stated:

13 And the letters were sent by posts into all the king's provinces, to destroy, to kill, and to cause to perish, all Jews, both young and old, little children and women, in one day, even upon the thirteenth day of the twelfth month, which is the month Adar, and to take the spoil of them for a prey. 14 The copy of the writing for a commandment to be given in every province was published unto all people, that they should be ready against that day. Esther 3:13-14

The letter that Mordecai sent said the Jews could fight back and defend themselves against “all the power of the people…that would assault them” (Esther 8:11-12). Now the Jews could prepare to fight, they could get together and make plans on how to defend themselves.

Throughout the book we do not see the name of God, but Mordecai and Esther certainly trusted the Lord. He would see them and their people through this horrible time.

As Christians, we need to trust God. He knows the end of the story and He will be with us, as He was with Mordecai and Esther, in all troubles and tribulations.

The LORD is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer; my God, my strength, in whom I will trust; my buckler, and the horn of my salvation, and my high tower. Psalm 18:2

Some trust in chariots, and some in horses: but we will remember the name of the LORD our God. Psalm 20:7

Commit thy way unto the LORD; trust also in him; and he shall bring it to pass. Psalm 37:5

What time I am afraid, I will trust in thee. Psalm 56:3

Trust in him at all times; ye people, pour out your heart before him: God is a refuge for us. Selah. Psalm 62:8

It is better to trust in the LORD than to put confidence in man. Psalm 118:8

Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.
6
In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths. Proverbs 3:5-6

A year in Review

Every year the TV, radio and newspapers will do a “year in review”. It might be the top news stories, which famous personalities died during the year, the top 100 songs of the year or the biggest tragedies of the year. No matter what the list contains, there is someone throughout the year keeping a record.

As I thought of this I started to review my year by assessing goals I set in January. I usually write them down and then review once in a while throughout the year to see if I am still “on track”.

Here is my list:
·        Do at least 1 Bible study: Examples: Kay Arthur, Jerry Bridges
·        “Establishing a heart for God” Bible study and Journal
·        Read/listen to Bible through in a year (chronically)
·        Read 4 Christian nonfiction books: Biographies, growth, counseling
·        Encourage/help others (Acts of Kindness)
·        Send notes/cards monthly
·        Memorize verses
·        Praise/prayer  Journal
·        Nanc certification - work on
·        Giving Jar
·        Walk a mile at least 3 times a week
·        Write at least  6 blogs a month

How did I do? Well I completed seven of the items listed above, three of them were partly completed and two I did not do at all. Do I feel like a failure? Absolutely not, I did many things not on my list and I learned daily that I need to follow Jesus’ lead.

As I reviewed last year I see blessing abound. God richly blesses us (all of us) daily. The political and economic environments around the world  have not always been strong, but God is still in control. Each and everything that is happening in the world today is not happening without His knowledge. I cannot get depressed about the world’s affairs but I can pray and ask God for wisdom and inner peace in times of duress.

The Bible is filled with assurance and comfort here are just a few verses:

… for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.  Hebrews 13:5

If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him. James 1:5

Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths. Proverbs 3:5 -6

Walk in wisdom toward them that are without, redeeming the time. Colossians 4:5

Let your speech be alway with grace, seasoned with salt, that ye may know how ye ought to answer every man. Colossians 4:6

Trust in him at all times; ye people, pour out your heart before him: God is a refuge for us. Selah. Psalm 62:8

For thou art my hope, O Lord GOD: thou art my trust from my youth. Psalm 71:5

But it is good for me to draw near to God: I have put my trust in the Lord GOD, that I may declare all thy works. Psalm 73:28

I will close my review with some entries from my thankful journal:

·        Jesus – I shudder to think of where I would be without Him
·        Bible – His precious word for guidance, wisdom, counsel… for everything
·        Health
·        Grandchildren
·        “Establishing a heart for God Bible study” Bible study journal
·        God’s protection
·        Surviving the blizzard of 2013
·        Neighbors – I have awesome neighbors who are there for us
·        Quiet time
·        Children
·        Family
·        God’s bountiful blessings Ps 68:19
·        Job
·        Ability to pay my bills
·        Coffee
·        Memories
·        Birds chirping – it means I can hear
·        Sunsets and sun risings – it means I can see
·        Balancing a checkbook – it means my mind is still functioning
·        Friends

I could go on and on, however, this is just a sliver of my thankfulness to the Great and Wonderful Creator for all He has done and will do.

Be glad in the LORD, and rejoice, ye righteous: and shout for joy, all ye that are upright in heart. Psalm 32:11

Rejoice in this verse means to “spin around” “be glad, joyful”. I have so much to “spin around” for. How about you? Start the New Year with a thankful journal and you will be pleasantly surprised when you do “a year in review”.

Lessons from Esther: Esther’s feast

Then the king made a great feast unto all his princes and his servants, even Esther's feast; and he made a release to the provinces, and gave gifts, according to the state of the king. 19 And when the virgins were gathered together the second time, then Mordecai sat in the king's gate. 20 Esther had not yet shewed her kindred nor her people; as Mordecai had charged her: for Esther did the commandment of Mordecai, like as when she was brought up with him. Esther 2:18-20

Time for another party! It appears that Ahasuerus (Xerxes) loved to give parties (feasts). There was a reason to celebrate. The king had picked a new queen. The feast was appropriately called “Esther’s feast.” He was so excited about his choice that the party extended to the provinces.

The king gave “a release” to the people. Depending on what commentary you read the release was either from paying taxes, or from work, such as a special holiday. Esther was given “gifts”, we are not told what type of gift but according to history of the Persian kings, it could be anything from lovely clothes to an entire city.

Meanwhile, Mordecai sat at the king’s gate. This was not your ordinary sitting but it was a position he held. J. Vernon McGee says, “This means that he is a judge, for the courthouse of the ancient world was the gate of the city.” We are not told how Mordecai came to receive this position but it shows that God is in control.  God had placed him in this new position. Mordecai is now sitting at the gate where he is able to hear and see what is going on in the kingdom.

Through her selection, the celebrations as well as the appointment of her cousin, Esther was harboring a secret. She kept the secret hidden in her heart because Mordecai, her adopted father, had asked her to. Her secret was even hidden from her Persian husband. No one but Esther and Mordecai knew that she was Jewish, and a captive from Jerusalem.

Behind the scene God was guiding each word said, each step taken by Esther and Mordecai. God will guide our words and our steps if we let Him. At the start of each day, we need to ask God for guidance and direction to lead us in the way we should go.

Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. 6 In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths. Proverbs 3:5-6

Lead me in thy truth, and teach me: for thou art the God of my salvation; on thee do I wait all the day. Psalm 25:5

Teach me thy way, O LORD, and lead me in a plain path, because of mine enemies. Psalm 27:11

And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen. Matthew 6:13

Lessons from Esther: The Keeper of the Women

9 And the maiden pleased him, and she obtained kindness of him; and he speedily gave her her things for purification, with such things as belonged to her, and seven maidens, which were meet to be given her, out of the king's house: and he preferred her and her maids unto the best place of the house of the women. 10 Esther had not shewed her people nor her kindred: for Mordecai had charged her that she should not shew it. Esther 2:9-10

As we learned from the last lesson, all the women were brought back to the king’s house. They were in the custody of Hegai, keeper of the women. Hegai was the one who took care of the women by getting them everything needed for the meeting with the king.

This portion of scripture tells us that Esther pleased him. He saw something in Esther and treated her with kindness. Hegai was so “taken “by Esther’s beauty as well as her calm demeanor that he gave her seven maids to take care of all the details.

Esther and her maids were given one of the best rooms. Keli & Delitzsch Commentary says, “he changed her and her maids into the best of the house of the women, i.e., he took them out of the ordinary rooms and placed them in the best apartments, probably in the state-rooms, where those who were accustomed to be brought to the king used to dwell.”

Throughout all the preparation and all the kindnesses shown to her, Esther kept her promise to Mordecai. She told no one of her Jewish ancestry.

He that keepeth his mouth keepeth his life: but he that openeth wide his lips shall have destruction. Proverbs 13:3

… a time to keep silence, and a time to speak; Ecclesiastes 3:7

I can see “God’s hand” throughout this portion of scripture. God’s care and protection are everywhere. Hegai took her “under his care”. He gave her preferential treatment. Esther was in the center of God’s will and He was taking care of her.

When a man's ways please the LORD, he maketh even his enemies to be at peace with him. Proverbs 16:7

Sometimes we think that if everything is not going “our way” then we must be doing something wrong. We need to trust God with every detail of our life. It doesn’t matter if it is small or large, God cares about everything. God was with Esther even in the middle of a foreign palace.

God cares about you and whatever you may be going through. Trust him with all your worries and problems.

Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. 6 In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths. Proverbs 3:5 -6

Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you. I Peter 5:7

Wisdom

Wisdom strengtheneth the wise more than ten mighty men which are in the city. Ecclesiastes 7:19

When we have God’s wisdom, found in His Holy book, we have more strength than ten mighty men.

For the LORD giveth wisdom: out of his mouth cometh knowledge and understanding. Proverbs 2:6

Happy is the man that findeth wisdom, and the man that getteth understanding. Proverbs 3:13

Need wisdom? Ask God who will gladly give it.

If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him. James 1:5

Crooked or Straight

Consider the work of God: for who can make that straight, which he hath made crooked? Ecclesiastes 7:13

Solomon is saying, we can’t change what God does. When God makes something crooked it will stay that way unless God makes it straight.

We do not understand all that God does. Many times we are baffled over events that take place whether in the world or in our “personal world”.

We need to trust God. He does not make mistakes. He knows “the end of the story.”

5 Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. 6  In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths. Proverbs 3:5-6

Wisdom or Money

11 Wisdom is good with an inheritance: and by it there is profit to them that see the sun. 12 For wisdom is a defence, and money is a defence: but the excellency of knowledge is, that wisdom giveth life to them that have it. Ecclesiastes 7:11-12

Solomon is saying that wisdom is as good as an inheritance. There may be some people who would disagree with the statement. How can wisdom be as good as getting an inheritance?

Will wisdom help me lead a better life or will money?

Will wisdom show me which job to apply for or will I be better off with more money?

Will wisdom get me the education I need or will money?

Warren Wiersbe in Be Satisfied has this to say about verses 11-12, “Money can lose its value, or be stolen, but true wisdom keeps its value and cannot be lost, unless we become fools and abandon it deliberately. The person who has wisdom will know how to get and use wealth. … Wisdom is like a “shelter’ to those who obey it; it gives greater protection than money.”

Here are a few more verses on the subject:

She (wisdom) is a tree of life to them that lay hold upon her: and happy is every one that retaineth her. Proverbs 3:18

My son, let not them depart from thine eyes: keep sound wisdom and discretion: Proverbs 3:21

For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows. 1Timothy 6:10

If you had a choice what would you choose, wisdom or money?

If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him. James 1:5

God put into my heart…

[1] Now it came to pass, when the wall was built, and I had set up the doors, and the porters and the singers and the Levites were appointed, [2] That I gave my brother Hanani, and Hananiah the ruler of the palace, charge over Jerusalem: for he was a faithful man, and feared God above many. [3] And I said unto them, Let not the gates of Jerusalem be opened until the sun be hot; and while they stand by, let them shut the doors, and bar them: and appoint watches of the inhabitants of Jerusalem, every one in his watch, and every one to be over against his house. [4] Now the city was large and great: but the people were few therein, and the houses were not builded. [5] And my God put into mine heart to gather together the nobles, and the rulers, and the people, that they might be reckoned by genealogy. And I found a register of the genealogy of them which came up at the first, and found written therein, …[73] So the priests, and the Levites, and the porters, and the singers, and some of the people, and the Nethinims, and all Israel, dwelt in their cities; and when the seventh month came, the children of Israel were in their cities. Nehemiah 7

The wall is built but the work is not finished. Nehemiah needs to fortify the city. He puts his brother, Hanani, and Hananiah, the ruler of the palace, in charge of Jerusalem. The reason was a simple one; they were faithful and feared God.

Plans are then made for when the gates will be opened and closed. Watches are set to guard the city and its inhabitants.

Nehemiah then sets to the task of putting together a genealogy. As the task was being undertaken a register was found listing the families.

The reason for the genealogy undertaking is because “God put into my heart to … reckon by genealogy.” Adam Clarke’s Commentary on the Bible states, “God put into mine heart - With this good man every good thing was of God. If he purposed any good, it was because God put it into his heart; if he did any good, it was because the good hand of his God was upon him; if he expected any good, it was because he earnestly prayed God to remember him for good. Thus, in all his ways he acknowledged God, and God directed all his steps.”

Nehemiah, a man of fortitude, made sure everything was in place. He was led by the Lord in all he did.

Am I led by the Lord in all I do? Are you? My mantra needs to be:

[5] Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. [6] In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.
Proverbs 3:5-6

Building continues

[6] So built we the wall; and all the wall was joined together unto the half thereof: for the people had a mind to work. [7 ]But it came to pass, that when Sanballat, and Tobiah, and the Arabians, and the Ammonites, and the Ashdodites, heard that the walls of Jerusalem were made up, and that the breaches began to be stopped, then they were very wroth, [8] And conspired all of them together to come and to fight against Jerusalem, and to hinder it. [9] Nevertheless we made our prayer unto our God, and set a watch against them day and night, because of them. Nehemiah 4:6-9

My last post was about all the opposition that Nehemiah endured. The discouraging words did not get him down, but fueled him to finish the project at hand. The building continued, the wall was joined together, because the “people had a mind to work”.

The enemies were now speaking of coming and starting a war against Jerusalem to hinder the work.

Nehemiah again prays to God and puts “action” to his prayer by setting up a watch day and night for the enemy.

Imagine, if the people today had a “mind to work” for God, not themselves, not for the secular world, but for God.

We need to keep our minds on the things of God. It is not easy since most of us are pulled in a hundred different directions, but pray and ask God what He would have you to do and do it.

[5] Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. [6] In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths. Proverbs 3:5-6

Acknowledging God

Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths. Proverbs 3:5-6

Trust in the Lord with all your heart
It is hard to trust especially when we cannot see the Person who is asking for our complete trust. He is asking us to trust Him with all our heart, not part of it; not some of it; but all of our whole entire being.

Some trust in chariots, and some in horses: but we will remember the name of the LORD our God. Psalm 20:7

In God have I put my trust: I will not be afraid what man can do unto me. Psalm 56:11

But it is good for me to draw near to God: I have put my trust in the Lord GOD, that I may declare all thy works. Psalm 73:28

Lean not to your own understanding
We need to lean on God, and not rely on our own understanding. He is the Great I Am, the Creator of the universe. His ways are perfect.

For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the LORD. Isaiah 55:8

Let us search and try our ways, and turn again to the LORD. Lamentations 3:40

Therefore now amend your ways and your doings, and obey the voice of the LORD your God … Jeremiah 26:13

In all thy ways acknowledge him
Do we acknowledge God in all our ways? Are our thoughts on Him when we are doing things? Do we pray and ask for guidance before we do things?

Lately, it seems like Christians just do, then think (or maybe don’t think) about the consequences. I have heard the saying “it is better to ask for forgiveness than permission.” This is not the way we need to live our Christian life. The Lord needs to be in control of our life.

We are all accountable to someone. The way we live our life does matter.

Commit thy works unto the LORD, and thy thoughts shall be established. Proverbs 16:3

O that my ways were directed to keep thy statutes! Psalm 119:5

The wicked, through the pride of his countenance, will not seek after God: God is not in all his thoughts. Psalm 10:4

He shall direct our paths
When will we realize why we were put on this earth? It is not to glorify ourselves but to glorify God. It is about Him not about us. That is certainly a hard pill to swallow, but when we put Him in the center of our lives, we realize our divine purpose.

We need to be willing to follow. Do we take direction from our Heavenly Commander?

He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake. Psalm 23:3

Shew me thy ways, O LORD; teach me thy paths. Psalm 25:4

I will praise thee, O Lord my God, with all my heart: and I will glorify thy name for evermore. Psalm 86:12

I have been praying these verses, asking the Lord to help me to trust, lean and acknowledge Him and He will show me the right path.

Skirting the channel

I work in the recreational boating service industry i.e. yacht club. Whenever someone does something questionable, but not really illegal, I have a co-worker who will say, “They’re skirting just outside the channel. “Skirting just outside the channel” is nautical slang meaning sailing the boat outside the “legal” place of sail. It may be too close to the shore; shallow water or rocks might be just under the surface.

A channel is “A navigable route on a waterway, usually marked by buoys. Channels are deep enough for ships or boats to navigate without running aground.” There is a reason why the coast guard has channels in the waterways. The channels are not there to confine the vessel but to help and guide it to the right destination. When sailing a boat (under normal circumstances i.e. not in stormy weather) and staying in the channel the chances are great that the vessel will arrive safe and secure.

Sailors use charts to help with the navigation at sea. The charts have everything marked out; basically it is a map for the water. As sailors in the world of life we also have a map for our life as a Christian. Our chart is known as the Bible. The Bible is our navigation tool to guide us through our course.

There are Christians who are “skirting the channel”. They will follow the course of the chart some of the time, but certainly not all the time.

Recently, I have heard a number of very questionable statements that are just outside the channel of Christian life. Here are a few of them:

God is not bound by His Word.

• Yes God can do anything He wants, He is God, but if it is in His Word He has to keep it because - God cannot lie.

• That by two immutable things, in which it was impossible for God to lie, we might have a strong consolation, who have fled for refuge to lay hold upon the hope set before us: Hebrews 6:18

• A faithful witness will not lie: but a false witness will utter lies. Proverbs 14:5

• Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen. Romans 1:25

• In hope of eternal life, which God, that cannot lie, promised before the world began; Titus 1:2

That verse is opened to interpretation.

• Whose interpretation? When we all have our own “take on a verse”, Someone is right and someone is wrong. We cannot all be right, but God is right. We need to dig in the scripture and find God’s answer.

• Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation. II Peter 1:20

That is the Old Testament.

• What does that mean? Do we not “pay attention” to the Old Testament?

• What did Jesus quote throughout the New Testament – the Old Testament. It certainly is relevant. God’s principles whether Old or New Testament are still God’s principles. We need to follow what God says.

• Here are a few places were Christ quoted the Old Testament: Matthew 4:4, 7, 10; Mark 7:6, 14:27; Luke 4:4, 10; John 6:31; 12:14

• For even hereunto were ye called: because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow his steps: I Peter 2:21

How can we stay in the channel?

Study the scriptures

• Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me. John 5:39

• These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so. Act 17:11

Be ready to change your ways

• And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth all men every where to repent: Act 17:30

• And they went out, and preached that men should repent. Mark 6:12

Repent in these verses are from Strong’s Greek number 3340
1) to change one's mind, i.e. to repent
2) to change one's mind for better, heartily to amend with abhorrence of one's past sins

"Repentance (metanoia, 'change of mind') involves a turning with contrition from sin to God; the repentant sinner is in the proper condition to accept the divine forgiveness." (F. F. Bruce. The Acts of the Apostles [Greek Text Commentary], London: Tyndale, 1952, p. 97.)

When you fail – don’t stay down but dust yourself off and get up.

• Not one of us is perfect, we all fail, and this is recognized in the book of Proverbs.

• For a just man falleth seven times, and riseth up again: but the wicked shall fall into mischief. Proverbs 24:16

Be careful what you follow – make sure it is of God not of men.

• That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive; Ephesians 4:14

Only you can answer the following questions:

Am I skirting the channel?
Am I following the chart?

We need to get back on course, steering our vessel in the middle of the channel.

Prayer Request

[5] Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. [6]In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths. Proverbs 3:5-6

In December, my husband, Mark, injured his back. He has been “out of commission” since a week before Christmas. He could walk for short distances before the pain kicked in. We made many trips to the doctors and lots of physical therapy appointments. The physical therapy did help, he went from using crutches to using a cane.

After much prayer he opted for surgery. He had surgery on Monday. It was outpatient and the doctor said he would be driving in a few days. After the surgery he could not lift his left leg. Needless to say he had to stay overnight in the hospital.

Yesterday he could stand with the help of two nurses. His left leg is still numb. The hospital is in the process of looking into rehab.

This may be “a bump in the road” as one of the nurses told us, but I ask for your prayers. I will update when I can but for the next few weeks Mark is my main concern.

Please pray for:

• God’s Wisdom
• The insurance company to approve rehab
• Mark’s physical strength and stamina

Have a blessed day,
Donna
