Word of Christ

Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord. Colossians 3:16

Teaching – to give instruction; to impart knowledge
Admonish – to caution or reprove mildly

Do I give the right advice and teaching to fellow Christians? Do I always have the right attitude when admonishing someone? The Bible says, “let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom”. Am I getting my wisdom from the Bible or from what someone says about the Bible. We need to be in the Word studying and applying it to our hearts.

Be kind and understanding when dealing with others. Ask God for His grace to do the right thing and say the right words. The only way we can get along with others is by coming to the Lord daily and asking for His guidance.

What are we teaching?

And daily in the temple, and in every house, they ceased not to teach and preach Jesus Christ. Acts 5:42

I found this poem on a blog a few months ago. Take a minute to read and reflect.

If I teach my children to speak Spanish, French, Latin, Greek, and Japanese, but do not teach them to love God, I have nothing.

If they know how to tell time and have their times tables memorized, but do not know the God of time and all eternity, it profits me nothing.

If I teach them all about psychology, sociology, anthropology, and philosophy, but they do not love the LORD their God with all their heart, soul, mind, and strength, I have gained nothing.

If they are well versed in William Shakespeare, Emily Dickinson, Ralph Waldo Emerson, and Edgar Alan Poe, but do not delight in the Law of the LORD, their learning has come to nothing.

If they know about George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin, and Abraham Lincoln, but do not know Jesus Christ as their Savior and LORD, their knowledge is meaningless.

If they are champions at spelling bees, get perfect scores on their SATs, and get accepted into the best universities, but reject their Creator, I have accomplished nothing.

If they are successful beyond my wildest dreams, if they have huge paychecks, giant houses, and lavish lifestyles; If they gain the whole world, and yet lose their souls, I am an utter failure.

So now I see that reading, writing, and arithmetic are important, literature, languages, and history are all valuable, science and social studies have their place,

but if I my children do not become fully devoted followers of Jesus Christ, I have merely educated them.

I must do more than educate them…I must disciple them.

I must teach them to love the LORD.

Teach your children

And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up. Deuteronomy 6:7

One day I brought my granddaughter to story hour at the library. While I sat and listened to the stories and watch my granddaughter’s reactions, I thought about stories. We all like to hear interesting stories, real stories, imagined stories, scary stories. We are all different and have different tastes in the stories we read or listen to. There are many things for us to learn through stories.

As I watched I thought of the verse in the Bible that says “to teach them in the way.” We are so engrossed in the things of the world that sometimes we neglect the things of God. I am so thankful that my children are teaching my grandchildren about God and Jesus.

While at the library, my granddaughter, who was three years old at the time, was playing with a toy ship. On the ship was a part that looked like a cross. I did not notice it but she did. “Look at the cross, Mimi. The cross is where Jesus died.”

My children are grown but my grandchildren are growing. I take any opportunity to teach them about God. Whether it is something as simple as sharing God’s creation while looking at a flower or a bug, or reading God’s word together.

As we start a new year take time to teach your children or grandchildren about God. Remember they are the next generation. They will be the ones to share the gospel with others, but it first must be shared with them.
