Fathers

James 1:17  Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.

Happy Father’s Day. I was thinking of some of the fathers that have touched my life. Some of the memories are good, some not so good, but I learned from them all. I am now in my 6th decade, but I still have fond memories

Maternal Grandfather
My maternal grandfather was always fun to be around. He would pick me up from my house on Fridays so I could sleep over. One of his favorite past times was “junk collecting”. He was one of the original “American Pickers”. People would leave “trash” on the side of the road and he knew all the “good places”. I loved to go with him when I was young.  While driving and “looking for the right junk” he told me stories about the area. He loved to tell the  “I remember when”  stories as we traveled around the town or city.

His cellar was loaded with all types of “treasure”. He had “a place for everything and everything was in its place”. My brothers and I would go downstairs with him to see the newly acquired  “stuff”.  In those days, my grandfather found many things lying on the side of the road. I still own two brass chandeliers, which he gave me when I moved to my own home.

My grandmother was crippled with arthritis, and my grandfather did whatever he could to help. He did laundry, grocery shopping and “straightening up” around the house. He installed a “buzzer” in the cellar (the original man cave) so grandma could just push from upstairs to get his help or call him to supper.

My maternal grandfather and my father did not speak to each other for eighteen years. During all those years he was still faithful to his grandchildren. He would visit, when my father wasn’t home. When my father was home, he would respect him and not go into the house but wait patiently for his grandchildren to bring them to his home for a visit. In all the years that the “feud” went on, I never heard my grandfather say an unkind word about my father.

My grandfather died of Alzheimer’s disease when he was in his mid 70s. I have many fond memories of him and his love for me and my brothers.

Dad
My father did not have a good role model from his own father. My father’s goal in life was, “I don’t want to be like my father”. To this end he worked very hard. He spent time with his children. He taught us many things: playing basketball, riding bikes, and fishing to name a few.

My father did not have a high school education, yet he was a very smart man. It always amazed me that he could figure out math problems “in his head” before I could write them down. He had his own contracting business for many years. He was a hard worker who provided for his family.

My dad was  very sentimental and very emotional. He would cry very easily. I remember one time shortly before his death, when my family traveled to visit him. He lived in FL while I lived in New England. When we arrived at the house, he was standing at the door, crying like a baby, because he was overjoyed to see us.

He was also a “worry wart”. He would worry about things that might happen. I sometimes think he would not know what to do if he did not “worry” about something.

I am so thankful for the father God gave me. He was not perfect but he was mine and I have many fond memories of him

Dad L
Another dad I knew was my father-in-law. Unfortunately I only knew him for 5 years before he died of cancer. He was an orphan at a very young age and reared by an aunt, who was not very kind. He did not have a father so his parenting skills were nil. He loved his seven children and wife but had a hard time showing it. One of my favorite memories is dad playing with “fisher price people” on the floor with my daughter.

My father in law would give his wife a “darling wife” birthday card and not sign it. When questioned about this he would reply, “she only has one husband.”

Here are a few of my father-in-law’s sayings:
·        What my necktie pay attention.
·        You can call me anything but late for dinner.
·        It’s a long ride home give the children some cookies for the ride. (we lived 15 minutes away)

The father of my children:
My husband is a wonderful man. He is a hardworking man who loves the Lord with all his heart. He was brought up in an Irish household where stoic is the main word. He was taught from a very early age that “boys don’t cry”.

Mark has always been there for me and the children, who are now adults. He worked extra jobs when the children were young so I could be home with them. He went to  Bible College at night while working a full and part time job. Many nights he stayed up until the wee hours of the morning to complete homework assignments.

He has a quirky sense of humor but always gets laughs at his corny jokes. Our granddaughters adore him and love to have “papa days” which include playing at the park and going to McDonald’s or Dunkin Donuts. Our grandsons, who are not local, also love to Skype and tell him what is happening in their lives.

He worked a full time job for many years while pastoring a church. He is one of the most dedicated and faithful men I know.  I am so thankful for a godly husband. I love you, Mark!

Closing thoughts
Today is Father’s Day, thank a father who has been an encouragement to you. Think with me of the “fathers you know”. Do you have great memories of your dad or  grandfather? Can you remember playing a favorite game with them or maybe having a “scary” story told by them?  Maybe you don’t have fond memories as I do but do not despair.

You have a great Father in Heaven. James calls him the “Father of lights”, he never changes. He is better than ten earthly fathers. God is always there right by our side. He is a kind and compassionate Father.

The Bible is rich in descriptive words explaining our Great and wonderful Father in Heaven. Here are a few verses to get you started:

A father of the fatherless, and a judge of the widows, is God in his holy habitation. Psalm 68:5

Like as a father pitieth his children, so the LORD pitieth them that fear him. Psalm 103:13

I have called upon thee, for thou wilt hear me, O God: incline thine ear unto me, and hear my speech. Psalm 17:6

When my father and my mother forsake me, then the LORD will take me up. Psalm 27:10

Have a wonderful day

Lessons from Esther: The Special Banquet

6 And the king said unto Esther at the banquet of wine, What is thy petition? and it shall be granted thee: and what is thy request? even to the half of the kingdom it shall be performed. 7 Then answered Esther, and said, My petition and my request is; 8 If I have found favour in the sight of the king, and if it please the king to grant my petition, and to perform my request, let the king and Haman come to the banquet that I shall prepare for them, and I will do to morrow as the king hath said. 9 Then went Haman forth that day joyful and with a glad heart: but when Haman saw Mordecai in the king's gate, that he stood not up, nor moved for him, he was full of indignation against Mordecai. Esther 5:6-9

The banquet is ready and the food and wine are served. Still very curious about why the queen would request his presence the king asks again, “what is your request?”

Esther does not have complete peace. Fasting for wisdom and guidance from the Lord she knows this is not the time to speak about the situation regarding her people. Esther quickly asks for another banquet. Again she requests the presence of both the king and Haman. The king, as we see from previous chapters, loves a good banquet. He confirms for both of them and I’m sure Esther starts the preparations right away. This next banquet needs to be perfect and the time needs to be right for her to brooch the delicate subject.

Imagine the pride that is welling up in Haman. Not just one banquet but two, he is “beside” himself. Being invited to a private banquet with just the king and queen, could he be any more special.

Haman’s joy is soon turned to indignation when he sees Mordecai. Indigation from the Hebrew means heat; figuratively anger, poison (from its fever): - … In other words, he is so hot with anger that it makes his blood curdle.

There are a few lessons to be learned from this short portion of scripture:

1. There are times to speak and there are times to be quiet.

… a time to keep silence, and a time to speak; Ecclesiastes 3:7

Wherefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath: James 1:19

2. Don’t let pride “creep” in

The wicked, through the pride of his countenance, will not seek after God: God is not in all his thoughts. Psalm 10:4

When pride cometh, then cometh shame: but with the lowly is wisdom. Proverbs 11:2

In the mouth of the foolish is a rod of pride: but the lips of the wise shall preserve them.  Proverbs 14:3

Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall. Proverbs 16:18

A man's pride shall bring him low: but honour shall uphold the humble in spirit. Proverbs 29:23

3. Beware of anger

Cease from anger, and forsake wrath: fret not thyself in any wise to do evil. Psalm 37:8

A wrathful man stirreth up strife: but he that is slow to anger appeaseth strife.  Proverbs 15:18

Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamour, and evil speaking, be put away from you, with all malice:  Ephesians 4:31

Be not hasty in thy spirit to be angry: for anger resteth in the bosom of fools.  Ecclesiastes 7:9

As we travel in our daily life let’s put on the courage of Esther (#1) not the character of Haman (#2&3).

Have a blessed day,

A year in Review

Every year the TV, radio and newspapers will do a “year in review”. It might be the top news stories, which famous personalities died during the year, the top 100 songs of the year or the biggest tragedies of the year. No matter what the list contains, there is someone throughout the year keeping a record.

As I thought of this I started to review my year by assessing goals I set in January. I usually write them down and then review once in a while throughout the year to see if I am still “on track”.

Here is my list:
·        Do at least 1 Bible study: Examples: Kay Arthur, Jerry Bridges
·        “Establishing a heart for God” Bible study and Journal
·        Read/listen to Bible through in a year (chronically)
·        Read 4 Christian nonfiction books: Biographies, growth, counseling
·        Encourage/help others (Acts of Kindness)
·        Send notes/cards monthly
·        Memorize verses
·        Praise/prayer  Journal
·        Nanc certification - work on
·        Giving Jar
·        Walk a mile at least 3 times a week
·        Write at least  6 blogs a month

How did I do? Well I completed seven of the items listed above, three of them were partly completed and two I did not do at all. Do I feel like a failure? Absolutely not, I did many things not on my list and I learned daily that I need to follow Jesus’ lead.

As I reviewed last year I see blessing abound. God richly blesses us (all of us) daily. The political and economic environments around the world  have not always been strong, but God is still in control. Each and everything that is happening in the world today is not happening without His knowledge. I cannot get depressed about the world’s affairs but I can pray and ask God for wisdom and inner peace in times of duress.

The Bible is filled with assurance and comfort here are just a few verses:

for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.  Hebrews 13:5

If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him. James 1:5

Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths. Proverbs 3:5 -6

Walk in wisdom toward them that are without, redeeming the time. Colossians 4:5

Let your speech be alway with grace, seasoned with salt, that ye may know how ye ought to answer every man. Colossians 4:6

Trust in him at all times; ye people, pour out your heart before him: God is a refuge for us. Selah. Psalm 62:8

For thou art my hope, O Lord GOD: thou art my trust from my youth. Psalm 71:5

But it is good for me to draw near to God: I have put my trust in the Lord GOD, that I may declare all thy works. Psalm 73:28

I will close my review with some entries from my thankful journal:

·        Jesus – I shudder to think of where I would be without Him
·        Bible – His precious word for guidance, wisdom, counsel… for everything
·        Health
·        Grandchildren
·        “Establishing a heart for God Bible study” Bible study journal
·        God’s protection
·        Surviving the blizzard of 2013
·        Neighbors – I have awesome neighbors who are there for us
·        Quiet time
·        Children
·        Family
·        God’s bountiful blessings Ps 68:19
·        Job
·        Ability to pay my bills
·        Coffee
·        Memories
·        Birds chirping – it means I can hear
·        Sunsets and sun risings – it means I can see
·        Balancing a checkbook – it means my mind is still functioning
·        Friends

I could go on and on, however, this is just a sliver of my thankfulness to the Great and Wonderful Creator for all He has done and will do.

Be glad in the LORD, and rejoice, ye righteous: and shout for joy, all ye that are upright in heart. Psalm 32:11

Rejoice in this verse means to “spin around” “be glad, joyful”. I have so much to “spin around” for. How about you? Start the New Year with a thankful journal and you will be pleasantly surprised when you do “a year in review”.

Have a blessed day,
Donna

Lessons from Esther: Sitting at the King’s gate

21 In those days, while Mordecai sat in the king's gate, two of the king's chamberlains, Bigthan and Teresh, of those which kept the door, were wroth, and sought to lay hand on the king Ahasuerus. 22 And the thing was known to Mordecai, who told it unto Esther the queen; and Esther certified the king thereof in Mordecai's name. 23 And when inquisition was made of the matter, it was found out; therefore they were both hanged on a tree: and it was written in the book of the chronicles before the king. Esther 2:21-23

The workings of the palace went on as usual. Everyone was in their right place doing their job. Again, we find Mordecai at the king’s gate. As I mentioned in the last blog, he had a position of authority, probably as a judge or an official of the court.

One of the jobs of this position was listening. Mordecai sat and listened, maybe to complaints, maybe to cases, maybe to people asking for favors, whatever the reason, he was listening and probably making decisions.

One day, Mordecai got an “ear full.” Someone came and told Mordecai about a plot to kill the king. Mordecai probably researched the source, and then he went to Queen Esther and told her.

Esther documented the incident in “Mordecai’s name” meaning she had it written down with the details noting that Mordecai was the one who discovered the “plot.” After an investigation was held and verified, the men were hung on a tree. The case was written in the king’s book.

What can be learned from this portion of scripture?

Mordecai being in the right place at the right time was not an accident. Mordecai hearing about the plot to kill the king was not just hearsay.

God is in control

The eyes of the LORD are in every place, beholding the evil and the good. Proverbs 15:3

For the eyes of the Lord are over the righteous, and his ears are open unto their prayers: but the face of the Lord is against them that do evil. I Peter 3:12

For the ways of man are before the eyes of the LORD, and he pondereth all his goings. Proverbs 5:21

Pay Attention

Wherefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath: James 1:19

We have two ears and one mouth so that we can listen twice as much as we speak.  Epictetus

When I was a child, my grandmother would quote this to me often. Usually it was when I was talking away and not listening or “carrying tales” about others.

A wise old owl lived in an oak
The more he heard the less he spoke1
The less he spoke the more he heard.
Why aren’t you like this wise old bird.

Be aware

We need to be aware of our surroundings. Mordecai was aware of what was going on around him. He was listening more than he was talking. He was a captive in a strange land, he needed to keep “his guard up”.

Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour: I Peter 5:8

Today as you do your daily tasks, pay attention, know God is in control and be aware of your surroundings.

I’ll end today with the words of an old hymn:

This world is not my home I'm just a passing through
My treasures are laid up somewhere beyond the blue
The angels beckon me from heaven's open door
And I can't feel at home in this world anymore
Oh Lord you know I have no friend like you
If heaven's not my home then Lord what will I do
The angels beckon me from heaven's open door
And I can't feel at home in this world anymore

Looking heavenward,
Donna

Wisdom is better than …

13 This wisdom have I seen also under the sun, and it seemed great unto me: 14 There was a little city, and few men within it; and there came a great king against it, and besieged it, and built great bulwarks against it: 15 Now there was found in it a poor wise man, and he by his wisdom delivered the city; yet no man remembered that same poor man. 16 Then said I, Wisdom is better than strength: nevertheless the poor man's wisdom is despised, and his words are not heard. 17 The words of wise men are heard in quiet more than the cry of him that ruleth among fools. 18 Wisdom is better than weapons of war: but one sinner destroyeth much good. Ecclesiastes 9:13-18

The word wisdom is mentioned 25 times in the book of Ecclesiastes. Wisdom was a subject that Solomon knew much about. When Solomon was first king, God put a question to him, “Ask what I shall give you.” (II Chronicles 1:7) Remember this was the God of the universe speaking to a newly appointed king.

Solomon could have asked for anything. God gave him the question and waited for the answer. The answer comes in II Chronicles 1:10 “Give me now wisdom and knowledge, that I may go out and come in before this people: for who can judge this thy people, that is so great? “

The answer Solomon gave was in and of itself wisdom. He knew God could and would give him anything he wanted but he asked for wisdom to lead and judge the people.

In this portion of scripture Solomon tells about a poor wise man who delivered a city. No details are mentioned of when and where but Solomon says no one remembered the man. This reminds me of why we do the things we do. Are we doing things in the “name of God” or the “name of wisdom” so others will notice, or do we do things in the name of God in the “quietness of our life” .

Wisdom is the best thing to have. It only takes one person to destroy something. Don’t be that one to destroy. Keep your eyes on Jesus, constantly ask him for wisdom in all aspects of your life.

For the LORD giveth wisdom: out of his mouth cometh knowledge and understanding. Proverbs 2:6

Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding. Proverbs 4:7

The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy is understanding. Proverbs 9:10

Are you going through hard times? Do you know someone who is going through hard times (physically or spiritually)? Ask God for wisdom to do and say the right thing.

If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him. James 1:5

Have a blessed day,

Seek out Wisdom

23 All this have I proved by wisdom: I said, I will be wise; but it was far from me. 24 That which is far off, and exceeding deep, who can find it out? 25 I applied mine heart to know, and to search, and to seek out wisdom, and the reason of things, and to know the wickedness of folly, even of foolishness and madness:  Ecclesiastes 7:23-25

Hope everyone enjoyed the holidays. I did take a little sabbatical from Ecclesiastes during November and December but I need to jump back in. For the next few weeks I will continue my thoughts and lessons on the book of Ecclesiastes.

Ecclesiastes reminds me so much of Proverbs. There is  a great deal to grasp, learn, absorb. It is loaded with “little gems”, “principles to live by”, “wisdom”.  All of this will do us no good unless we apply it to our everyday life.

The word wisdom is mentioned 234 times in 222 verses.

Let’s take a look at the 5 W’s of wisdom:

Whose wisdom should we desire?
O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! how unsearchable are his judgments, and his ways past finding out! Romans 11:33

That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give unto you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of him: Ephesians 1:17

What is wisdom?
From the Hebrew Strong’s #2449; wisdom (in a good sense): - skillful, wisdom, wisely, wit.

Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines wisdom as:
1 a : accumulated philosophic or scientific learning : knowledge
b : ability to discern inner qualities and relationships : insight
c : good sense : judgment
d : generally accepted belief wisdom
among many historians — Robert Darnton>
2: a wise attitude, belief, or course of action
3: the teachings of the ancient wise men

Where do we get wisdom?
If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him. James 1:5

When do we get wisdom?
Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding. Proverbs 4:7

The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy is understanding. Proverbs 9:10

Why would we want wisdom?
Walk in wisdom toward them that are without, redeeming the time. Colossians 4:5

But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be intreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy. James 3:17

Ask God for His wisdom to:
·        Give discernment
·        Act correctly  -according to His Word
·        Redeem time correctly
·        Share His Word with knowledge

May our prayer be this year: O Lord, teach us to number our days and apply our hearts to Your wisdom to do and say the correct things today. (Psalm 90:12)

Have a blessed day,

Wisdom

Wisdom strengtheneth the wise more than ten mighty men which are in the city. Ecclesiastes 7:19

When we have God’s wisdom, found in His Holy book, we have more strength than ten mighty men.

For the LORD giveth wisdom: out of his mouth cometh knowledge and understanding. Proverbs 2:6

Happy is the man that findeth wisdom, and the man that getteth understanding. Proverbs 3:13

Need wisdom? Ask God who will gladly give it.

If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him. James 1:5

Have a blessed day,
Donna

Wisdom or Money

11 Wisdom is good with an inheritance: and by it there is profit to them that see the sun. 12 For wisdom is a defence, and money is a defence: but the excellency of knowledge is, that wisdom giveth life to them that have it. Ecclesiastes 7:11-12

Solomon is saying that wisdom is as good as an inheritance. There may be some people who would disagree with the statement. How can wisdom be as good as getting an inheritance?

Will wisdom help me lead a better life or will money?

Will wisdom show me which job to apply for or will I be better off with more money?

Will wisdom get me the education I need or will money?

Warren Wiersbe in Be Satisfied has this to say about verses 11-12, “Money can lose its value, or be stolen, but true wisdom keeps its value and cannot be lost, unless we become fools and abandon it deliberately. The person who has wisdom will know how to get and use wealth. … Wisdom is like a “shelter’ to those who obey it; it gives greater protection than money.”

Here are a few more verses on the subject:

She (wisdom) is a tree of life to them that lay hold upon her: and happy is every one that retaineth her. Proverbs 3:18

My son, let not them depart from thine eyes: keep sound wisdom and discretion: Proverbs 3:21

For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows. 1Timothy 6:10

If you had a choice what would you choose, wisdom or money?

If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him. James 1:5

Have a blessed day,

God gives…

17 All his days also he eateth in darkness, and he hath much sorrow and wrath with his sickness. 18 Behold that which I have seen: it is good and comely for one to eat and to drink, and to enjoy the good of all his labour that he taketh under the sun all the days of his life, which God giveth him: for it is his portion. 19 Every man also to whom God hath given riches and wealth, and hath given him power to eat thereof, and to take his portion, and to rejoice in his labour; this is the gift of God. 20 For he shall not much remember the days of his life; because God answereth him in the joy of his heart. Ecclesiastes 5:17-20

God gives. He has given us everything we have. Solomon recognized that all he had was because the Lord had given it to him. Solomon the man who asked for wisdom above all else realized the wisdom he had was a gift from God.

If you have food – thank God
If you have a place to lay your head – thank God
If you have a talent – thank God
If you have riches – thank God
If you have anything big or little – thank God

Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of li ghts, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning. James 1:17

Reflect upon your present blessings, of which every man has many: not on your past misfortunes, of which all men have some. ~ Charles Dickens

An old hymn says count your blessings name them one by one. Take a moment to look around and start counting.

Have a blessed day,

Restoration continues

[23] In those days also saw I Jews that had married wives of Ashdod, of Ammon, and of Moab: [24] And their children spake half in the speech of Ashdod, and could not speak in the Jews' language, but according to the language of each people. [25] And I contended with them, and cursed them, and smote certain of them, and plucked off their hair, and made them swear by God, saying, Ye shall not give your daughters unto their sons, nor take their daughters unto your sons, or for yourselves. [26] Did not Solomon king of Israel sin by these things? yet among many nations was there no king like him, who was beloved of his God, and God made him king over all Israel: nevertheless even him did outlandish women cause to sin. [27] Shall we then hearken unto you to do all this great evil, to transgress against our God in marrying strange wives? [28] And one of the sons of Joiada, the son of Eliashib the high priest, was son in law to Sanballat the Horonite: therefore I chased him from me. [29] Remember them, O my God, because they have defiled the priesthood, and the covenant of the priesthood, and of the Levites. [30] Thus cleansed I them from all strangers, and appointed the wards of the priests and the Levites, every one in his business; [31] And for the wood offering, at times appointed, and for the firstfruits. Remember me, O my God, for good. Nehemiah 13:23-31

The book of Nehemiah ends. We can see the progression of sin, repentance, obedience, restoration and then the  cycle starts again.

Wow, is this just in Nehemiah’s time. I dare say no. The Christian life is like any other life. We make mistakes, we learn from our mistakes, we make more mistakes, we learn from those. Life is a circle. Hopefully we learn and grow and do not make the same mistakes again, but sometimes we do. We are imperfect people but we have a perfect Savior. He is always waiting to teach us His way.

For a just man falleth seven times, and riseth up again: but the wicked shall fall into mischief. Proverbs 24:16

We may not have the same problems as the people in Nehemiah’s time, but we still have problems.

In this portion Nehemiah is saying, what you are doing is the same thing that King Solomon did. Do you not remember that he was drawn away from God because of sin?

For it came to pass, when Solomon was old, that his wives turned away his heart after other gods: and his heart was not perfect with the LORD his God, as was the heart of David his father. 1Kings 11:4

I think of all the things/events/people/places that can draw me away from God. I have to make a conscience decision to stay away from those things. It is not easy to do right.

·        The first step is to know yourself and know your weaknesses. Stay away from those temptations.

There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it. 1Corinthians 10:13

Blessed is the man that endureth temptation: for when he is tried, he shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord hath promised to them that love him. James 1:12

·        Learn from the mistakes of others. There are many examples in the Bible as well in history and even in our own circle of family and friends.

·        Ask the Lord to restore you. No matter what one has done He is waiting with outstretched arms to receive us.

If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 1John 1:9

Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation; and uphold me with thy free spirit. Psalm 51:12

·        We can break the cycle of sin if we are willing to wholly follow Him.

But thou, O man of God, flee these things; and follow after righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, meekness. 1 Timothy 6:11

For even hereunto were ye called: because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow his steps: 1Peter  2:21

Please join me on my next post. I will sum up what I learned about Nehemiah.

The Unchangeable God

God is not a man, that he should lie; neither the son of man, that he should repent: hath he said, and shall he not do it? or hath he spoken, and shall he not make it good? Numbers 23:19

But thou art the same, and thy years shall have no end. Psalm 102:27

For I am the LORD, I change not; therefore ye sons of Jacob are not consumed. Malachi 3:6

Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and today, and forever. Hebrews 13:8

Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning. James 1:17

Albert Barnes says, “He is always the same, at all seasons of the year, and in all ages; there is no change in his character, his mode of being, his purposes and plans. What he was millions of ages before the worlds were made, he is now; what he is now, he will be countless millions of ages hence.”

Happy Father’s Day

Blessed be God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort; II Corinthians 1:3

Today is Father’s Day, thank a father who has been an encouragement to you. Think with me of fathers you know. Do you have great memories of your dad or grandfather? Can you remember playing a favorite game with them or maybe having a “scary” story told by them? Maybe you don’t have fond memories as I do but do not despair.

You have a great Father in Heaven. James calls him the Father of lights, he never changes.

Psalm 17:6

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ: Ephesians 1:3

Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning. James 1:17

Falling apart gate

Wherefore lay apart all filthiness and superfluity of naughtiness, and receive with meekness the engrafted word, which is able to save your souls. James 1:21

As I continue looking at gates, I came across a gate that was falling apart. This gate reminded me of a life separated from Christ or a life without Christ. Is the gate around your heart falling apart? Is it alienated from God? Does your life seem like it is falling apart because you have strayed so far away. Being far away from God can be a lonely place indeed.

There may be many reasons why the gate of our heart is falling apart. The reason might be obvious or it might be something hidden in the recesses of our mind. Only we know the answer.

It doesn’t matter why the heart gate is falling apart, what matters is what we are going to do about it. Is there a time in your life that you repented of your sin and asked Jesus to forgive you and save you? Did you answer yes? God has not moved He is still there waiting to welcome you back into His love and care.

If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. I John 1:9

Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. … James 4:8

Was the answer to the question no? God is patiently waiting to make you part of His family. Don’t be like King Agrippa in Acts 26 who said to Paul, “almost thou persuadest me to be a Christian” If you know you are not a Christian and would like to be one please see below.

Have you walked the Romans Road?

The Romans Road is a group of Bible verses that show the way of salvation in Jesus Christ.

As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one: Romans 3:10
The Bible says no one is innocent.

For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God; Romans 3:23
We all have sin in our hearts. We all were born with sin. We were born under the power of sin's control.
- Admit that you are a sinner.

Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned: Romans 5:12
We all have original sin from Adam, the first man.

For the wages of sin is death; … Romans 6:23
Sin has an ending. It results in death. We all face physical death, which is a result of sin. But a worse death is spiritual death that alienates us from God, and will last for all eternity.
- Understand that you deserve death for your sin.

… but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. Romans 6:23
Praise God that verse 23 does not end with death. The verse continues BUT (God gives us a choice)
Salvation is a free gift from God to you! You can't earn this gift, but you must reach out and receive it.
- Ask God to forgive you and save you.

I tell you, Nay: but, except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish. Luke 13:3
Repent means to think differently. We need to think differently about our sin and turn from it.

But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. Romans 5:8
Jesus died for our sin, your sin and mine . He paid the price for all sin, when He took all the sins of the world on Himself on the cross.

That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. [10] For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. Romans 10:9-10

For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. Romans 10:13
- If you know that God is knocking on your heart's door, ask Him to come into your heart.

Pray and ask Jesus to forgive you of your sin and come into your life and save you. Repent and turn to Him.

Start today by repairing the gate of your heart by accepting the love of Jesus. Jesus died for the sins of the world. Won’t you accept His sacrifice for you? Please let me know if you asked Jesus to save you, by leaving me a comment.

Dear Heavenly Father, if there is anyone who does not know you as savior please soften their heart. Let them know that you are willing and waiting to accept them into your kingdom. Amen.

Have a blessed day,Donna

Fathers

Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.
James 1:17

Today is Father’s Day. I have been thinking of the fathers I know. All of them are totally different personalities. I have learned many things from these men, positive and negative. The most important part of learning from others is not to repeat the same mistakes but learn from them.

Maternal Grandfather
My maternal grandfather was always fun to be around. He would pick me up from my house on Fridays so I could sleep over. One of his favorite past times was “junk collecting”, I loved to go with him. While driving and “looking for the right junk” he would tell me stories about the area. He loved to tell the “I remember when stories” as we traveled around the town or city.

His cellar was loaded with all types of “treasure”. My brothers and I would go down stairs with him to see the newly acquired “stuff”. In those days, my grandfather found many things lying on the side of the road. I still own two brass chandeliers, which he gave me when I moved to my own house, that he found discarded by the side of the road.

My maternal grandfather and my father did not speak to each other for eighteen years. During all those years he was still faithful to his grandchildren. He would visit, when my father was not home.

Paternal Grandfather
My paternal grandfather was cranky and cantankerous. I do not have a lot of good memories about him. He would complain about everything. In my grandparent's house was a very small pantry. This pantry contained the stove, refrigerator, sink, cabinets and a very tiny counter top. There was enough room for 1 adult to do the cooking and cleaning.

Every Sunday, when I was young we would visit my grandparents. We no sooner stepped over the threshold then my grandfather would start to complain about something. He did not want the kids to touch the candy, which was left in many candy bowls throughout the house. We could not eat or drink anything unless we were in the pantry. There were five of us so we would all have to go in the cramped pantry and eat or drink.

The only memories my own children have of him are “I was always afraid of him”, “”He was always yelling.” My memories of my parental grandfather are not “warm and fuzzy”. The memories are of an old, crabby, and bitter man.

He had his own contracting business for many years. He was a hard worker who provided for his family. He was always there for me no matter the time of day.
My dad was very sentimental and very emotional. He would cry very easily. I remember one time shortly before his death, when my family went down to visit him.

He was not perfect but he was mine and I have many loving memories of him.

He was an alcoholic but always handed his check over to his wife so the children would be feed and clothed.

My father in law would give his wife a “darling wife” birthday card and not sign it. When questioned about this he would reply, “she only has one husband.”

Here are a few of my father-in-laws sayings:
What my necktie pay attention.
You can call me anything but late for dinner.
It’s a long ride home give the children some cookies for the ride. (we lived 15 minutes away)

The father of my children
My husband is a wonderful man. He is a hardworking man who loves the Lord with all his heart. He is
not demonstrative but his children know he loves them dearly.

He still works a full time job while pastoring a church. He is one of the most dedicated and faithful men I know. I am so thankful for a godly husband. I love you, Mark!

Final Thoughts
Today is Father’s Day, thank a father who has been an encouragement to you. Think with me of the “fathers you know”. Do you have great memories of your dad or grandfather?
